The United Paintball Federation Paintball World Championship 2026 came to Dreux, France, on 2 and 3 September, and left with a new nation at the top of the podium, a five-time champion still setting the pace everywhere else, and a field bigger than anything the sport has seen since before the pandemic.
Twenty-five nations sent 70 national teams into five categories, Men, Veterans, Women, Under 19 and Under 16, for 170 games across two days on three fields at the venue shared with the NXL European Championship. It is the largest field since 2019, when 26 nations competed, and the most team entries in that same span. Four federations made their World Championship debut: Colombia, Denmark, Kuwait and Malta. Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and South Africa all returned after gaps of their own, extending a competition that first crowned champions well over a decade ago.
Every team played four preliminary games before the format tightened into knockout rounds sized to each category's field: the biggest categories cut to a top eight, the mid-sized fields to a top six through a play-in round, and the smallest to a direct top four. By Thursday afternoon the story of the tournament was already taking shape, and it belonged, in large part, to the United States.
USA's day
The United States won four of the five World Championship titles in Dreux: Veterans, Women, Under 19 and Under 16. Two of those four came in finals decided by a single point, none tighter than the Veterans final itself, a 4-3 win over Poland. The U.S. Women's team beat Germany 3-2 for a fourth straight title. The Under 19 and Under 16 sides each extended championship streaks that stretch back to 2022, when both categories returned to the World Championship calendar after the pandemic years. Only in Men's did the Americans have to settle for silver.

Poland's breakthrough
That gold went to Poland, and it meant history. Poland's Men had never won a World Championship medal in the category before Dreux; their best previous finish was fourth, in 2016, 2022, 2023 and 2025. On Thursday they beat the United States 4-1 in the final for a first title in the category, a gold earned the hard way, through a 4-0 semi-final win over Great Britain after edging Germany in the quarter-final. It capped a difficult afternoon for Poland in the other direction too: the same federation had lost the Under 19 semi-final and the Veterans final earlier in the day before the Men's final put them back on top.
A tough week for the hosts
France arrived as reigning Men's and Veterans champions and left with a mixed record on home soil. The Men's team, champions in 2021 and 2025, were eliminated in the pool stage in Dreux, beaten by Portugal in the opening slot before a late run of wins was not enough to advance. The Veterans, three-time champions and unbeaten through a 16-0 pool, took bronze after a semi-final loss to Poland. France's Women took bronze as well, their third podium finish in as many years, and the Under 16 team added a silver, their second in three editions. It leaves France still the most decorated nation in the competition's history, even in a year that did not deliver on home soil the way the federation would have wanted.

Elsewhere on the podium
Great Britain's Men took their first World Championship bronze after a run that included an earlier gold and three silvers across the competition's history. Germany's Women collected a third silver medal without yet winning the category outright. Norway's Under 19 side reached a second final in three editions. Italy's Under 16 team medalled for the third time in four editions. The Netherlands recorded their best-ever Women's finish, fourth place, and Denmark reached the Veterans quarter-final on debut. Portugal's Men reached the quarter-final for the first time in the federation's history, and Mexico's Men finished fourth for a second year running.
Looking to 2027
More than 500 players and over 650 accredited participants travelled to Dreux from 25 nations, the widest the World Championship has been since 2019. The federation's next World Championship is already taking shape, with the date and venue to be announced and more nations expected to join the field. For the sport's oldest international federation event, 2026 was a reminder of how far the competition has grown, and a preview of what is still to come.
